Who Can Attend Porterville College?
Students who have not previously attended a college or university may be admitted to Porterville College if they are either graduates of an accredited high school, or non-high school graduates 18 years of age, who can profit from the instructional programs of the college. Students who have attended another college or university may be admitted to Porterville College by completing the application for admissions form.
What are my responsibilities as a student?
All students have the responsibility of being informed about Porterville College policies and regulations. The Porterville College catalog clearly describes the regulations and procedures regarding limits on credit load, minimum credit requirements, English requirements, required labs, course prerequisites, refund policies, probation and disqualification policies, etc.
Students who do not have a college catalog may purchase a copy in the bookstore or view it online .
Graduation and transfer requirements may change from year to year; therefore, it is important for students to keep a catalog from the year they entered Porterville College.
The Porterville College staff is available to students for assistance in meeting requirements and following the procedures. However, students are ultimately responsible for their academic progress.
Non-Credit Classes
The college offers a limited number of non-credit classes on campus. Registration forms may be picked up at the Office of Admissions and Records (AC-112).
Cancellation of Classes
Porterville College has developed this schedule of classes expressly to meet the needs of students in our service area who desire to further their education. Every effort has been made to meet the instructional needs of the greatest number of students attending. Times and dates of classes have been arranged for the convenience and benefit of the students.
There are times when a class falls short of the minimum number of enrollees to justify keeping it open. Usually, this minimum number is 18 students. Cancelling a class generally happens in less than five percent of the offerings in any given semester. We regret the inconvenience the cancellation of even one class may cause to our students. Porterville College desires that all classes scheduled be adequately filled. However, Porterville College reserves the right to cancel a scheduled class because of insufficient enrollment, lack of a qualified credentialed instructor, or in the best interest of students and the overall college program.
Important Definitions:
If you should see the words prerequisite, corequisite or recommendation in the catalog, it is important for you to understand the definition of these terms.
- Prerequisite means a condition of enrollment which a student is required to meet in order to demonstrate current readiness for enrollment in a course or educational program.
- Corequisite means a condition of enrollment consisting of a course which a student is required to simultaneously take in order to enroll in another course.
- Recommendation means a condition of enrollment which a student is advised, but not required, to meet before or in conjunction with enrollment in a course or educational program.
Register in person or online - it’s your choice!
We think you’ll like the ease of online registration. In fact, once you get the hang of it, you’ll probably wish it had happened sooner! We’ll assist you in any way we can, because we want registration to be as simple and painless as possible. One of the great advantages of web registration is that you can access the system via the World Wide Web at any time and any place. The campus provides computers to register in the Student Services Center lobby (AC-126) and the Financial Aid Office (AC-103).
When you are Finished
Don’t forget to logout of the PC Online Registration Process and exit from your browser. This is especially important when you are using a public computer because it is the only way to ensure your information will not be viewed by anyone using the computer after you.
Campus Smoking Policy
State law relating to smoking in or around state facilities has changed. Here is the relevant law as it stands since September 8, 2003:
AB846 (Vargas): Expands the smoke-free zone from 5 feet to 20 feet outside the entrance or exit or operable window of any public building (including community college campuses).
http://info.sen.ca.gov/pub/bill/asm/ab_0801-0850/ab_846_bill_20030908_chaptered.html
The relevant paragraphs: 7597.
No public employee or member of the public shall smoke any tobacco product inside a public building, or in an outdoor area within 20 feet of a main exit, entrance, or operable window of a public building*, or in a passenger vehicle, as defined by Section 465 of the Vehicle Code, owned by the state.
This section shall not preempt the authority of any county, city, city and county, California Community College campus, campus of the California State University, or campus of the University of California to adopt and enforce additional smoking and tobacco control ordinances, regulations, or policies that are more restrictive than the applicable standards required by this chapter.
*NOTE: A “main exit [or] entrance” would include classroom and restroom doors that are the primary entrance/exit for that part of our facility.
